Huge, diverse and spread out. The dating challenge here is geography more than numbers.
Houston has one of the largest Black populations in the country and one of the most spread-out cities to hold it. You are not short of people. You are short of people within a reasonable drive on a Tuesday. Someone in Katy and someone in Pearland are theoretically in the same city and practically in different worlds, and plenty of promising matches quietly die of traffic.
The map matters
Third Ward and the area around Texas Southern and the University of Houston hold the historic centre of Black Houston. Missouri City, Pearland and Sugar Land in the south have drawn a large Black middle and professional class out of the city core. The Heights and Montrose skew younger and more mixed. Where someone lives here is mostly a statement about commute tolerance and life stage.
Where people actually meet

- —Food, endlessly — the restaurant scene is the city's real common language
What nobody tells you
Be explicit about location early. "Houston" covers roughly 600 square miles, and a 45-minute each-way drive kills more budding relationships here than incompatibility does. The upside of that same sprawl: the city is affordable enough that people in their thirties are actually settled, own homes, and are looking for something durable rather than another situationship.
